Self Portrait in a Straw Hat, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, 1782
By the time she was 15, Élisabeth was earning enough money from her portrait painting to support herself, her widowed mother, and her younger brother. Élisabeth became Marie Antoinette’s portraitist, painting over 30 portraits of the queen and her family. With support from the queen, she was granted membership in the prestigious and almost entirely male Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture.
Élisabeth fled France during the revolution and worked as a painter in Italy, Russia, England, Switzerland and Austria. She was able to return to France during the reign of Napoleon. Before her death at age 86 in 1842, Élisabeth created approximately 600 paintings. Her work can be seen in the Hermitage, the National Gallery (UK), and the National Museum of Women in the Arts (US).
I don’t even like rhythm, assonance, all that stuff. You just go on your nerve.
